"Left his native country October 18, 1842.... resided in New York City until July 20th, 1852." John was only 13 years of age when he came to America, accompanied by a 70 year old grandmother according to family reports. He may have been brought here at that age, so that he could learn a trade, which was not a possibility for him in Germany. He moved to Dayton, OH by1853 when he married there. In the 1880 census family was living at 344 South Main St. Dayton, OH. John S. Charch was a a very successful tailor and clothing merchant in Dayton.
The story is that John's name was changed to Charch by a sign painter. Rather than have the sign redone he changed his name and kept the sign. It would appear that the middle inital S. was created by this sign painter. John was a prominent businessman in Dayton, OH where he owned and operated a tailor shop.
